Men are strange creatures, but occupational psychologist Angela Carter is here to help unravel their mysteries…
While there is not a strict gender divide, men’s attraction to the pub lies in its simplicity. It is perfect that they can turn up without an appointment or much organizing. They tend to prefer old-fashioned pubs to bars, as they have more space to stand in a group, talk to lots of people and mingle. In contrast, women are more likely to arrange to meet up with two or three close friends and sit together to have a proper catch-up. It is a much more intimate experience compared to men, who particularly like being able to stand at the bar and not sit down, it gives them a sense of ownership, especially if the pub’s their local.
Men’s dialogue and conversation is in shorter bursts, it is more direct and mostly about passing on information. They tend to agree on a topic, rather wanting to discuss it. Women talk for longer, and want to find out things, not just facts, but feelings. ‘How do you feel?’ is the worst question you could ask most men, though. They hate it.
The way they communicate is partly why men like sport in pubs, it happens in a short space of time, they’ve all been involved in it, and it’s something current and factual.
